Emerald jewellery
With their characteristic light to dark green colour, emeralds are among one of the most popular natural gemstones. They are a type of beryl with a hardness of 7,5-8. Their distinguishing features include small cracks and inclusions which are proof of their natural origins. Together with rubies and sapphires, they make up the big three of gemstones.
COLOUR: Emerald jewellery has a rare shade of green. The cool blend of blue and green is typical of these stones and no other stone can completely replace or imitate it. This colour is caused by the addition of chromium in the stone's mineral structure.
CUT: Because of their popularity, a special type of cut called the "emerald cut" was developed for emeralds. This is a rectangular or square cut that better protects the stone from stress as a result of wear and tear and that enhances its brilliance and colour. Emeralds are often cut into traditional round and oval shapes, which stand out especially in rings and necklaces.
WEIGHT: The weight of an emerald is expressed in carats (ct) to 2 decimal places - 1 ct = 0.20 g. With earrings and jewellery which have multiple emeralds, we always state the total number of carats of all the stones.
CARE: Emeralds are fragile and relatively sensitive, so they should avoid any impact or hot water. Cleaning should ideally only be done with a damp cloth. For a more complete overall look, rub the emerald with a cotton bud dipped in oil.
